A guitar capo is used to raise the base key of the guitar from typically E to another key, to match the singer or to play the chords of a song easier. In effect, a guitar capo uses a fret of an instrument to create a new nut at a higher note than the instrument’s actual nut. For instance playing in E on a guitar is easy however what if the song is in F#? To use the same fingerings of chords put a guitar capo on the Second Fret at the F# position on the low E string. There are various guitar capo designs, but most consist of a rubber bar that clamps to the instrument’s neck in some way to hold down the strings. Capos come in different sizes and shapes for different instruments and fretboard curvatures so choose the right one for your guitar and playing style. Factors that you should be aware of if a cheap guitar capo is used it may result in strings being bent or mispositioned eg the guitar will sound out of tune, plus, some capo designs can mark the neck of the guitar if applied incorrectly, cheap is not a wise choice if you have a £4000 gibson les paul!
