Why Choose a Practice Valve Guitar Amp?
Valve guitar amplifier enthusiasts believe that tube guitar amps produce a “warmer” sound and a more natural “overdrive” sound. You will often hear guitar players talking about tone and this refers mainly to the sound from a valve guitar amplifier. From the 1930’s onward a number of companies began manufacturing small portable combo guitar amplifiers. These early amps featured valve circuit design technology for converting the small voltage that was generated by a pickup, or microphone, in the guitar body and amplifying it into a larger voltage that could drive a speaker cone and allow the sound to be heard.

More Valve Guitar Amplifiers
Valve guitar amplifiers can be broken into two types – Head and Combo.
Head style valve guitar amps include the valve amplifier power circuit within a cabinet making the amplifier portable and easily transported from gig to gig. The down side of this type of amplifier is that you will also need to buy a separate matched speaker cabinet if you want to hear your guitar. If playing at a venue which has speakers and a PA available then this will not be an issue however you should check first to see if you need to take your speaker cabinet with you.
The earliest amplifiers were Combo style valve guitar amps which is a complete unit designed with the amplifier circuit and speaker within the same cabinet. This makes the unit heavier but in the early days valve guitar amplifiers were small with outputs from 3W to 30W. It is only in the 70s when big rock bands started touring that companies like Marshall guitar amplifiers began making valve amplifiers of 100W output and more.
